Take DART to Pearse Street station. Turn left on leaving
station and a further left turn at the top of the road. This will
bring you onto Merrion Square, stop off at the National Gallery
for a bite to eat (it gets quiet busy between 1 - 2 PM), wander
on past the Dail (Irish Parliament) and Government buildings.
Take a right turn onto Baggot Street and walk 200 metres down
the road as far as Stephen's Green (magnificent park located at
the centre of another fine Georgian square). Stop off at the Shelbourne
Hotel for afternoon tea or a pint in the Horsehoe bar (located
in the hotel and a favourite haunt of Ireland's politicians).

Smithfield and environs. For a taste of old Dublin take the DART
to Tara Street Station and amble west up along the quays of the
River Liffey, pass O'Connell Bridge, the Halpenny Bridge and the
Four Courts and follow the signs for Smithfield market. Smithfield
now houses a museum of Irish traditional music, a viewing tower
offering unparalleled views over Dublin City as well as the old
Jameson Whiskey distillery. Accross the river lies the Guinness
Brewery.

The quickest and
most pleasant way to digest the unique look and feel of Dublin City.
Look out for the signs on bus stops indicating the open top double
decker public buses stop there. A very reasonably priced day pass
lets you travel on any of these buses. Their itinerary will take
you through Georgian Dublin as well as the old style Dublin around
Smithfield, The Guiness brewery, Phoenix Park and numerous other
points of interest in between. Highly recommended. |

The oldest university in Ireland, situated in the heart of Dublin,
houses in its long library the world renowned Book of Kells, an
illuminated manuscript of the four gospels of the Bible written
in Latin dating from 800 A.D. - one of the oldest books in the
world. The buildings and grounds of the university are magnificent.
Stop off at the Pavilion bar located beside the cricket pitch
for a bite to eat and a drink if the weather is good.
